Coastal route Ås-Moss, via Drøbak and Hvitsten

Lovely trip recommended by the local cyclist organisation in Ås
  • Area Ås
  • Distance 48.8 km
  • Difficulty Moderate
  • Terrain Climbing

The trip starts at Ås Kulturhus and goes on pedestrian / cycle paths and mostly low-traffic roads to Moss Station. The trip between Drøbak and Son is not recommended for smaller children and adults who feel unsafe with cars around them. The traffic can be quite heavy in some places during the summer season. It also runs along Osloveien for a short distance before following the pedestrian / cycle path into Moss. However, it’s a great ride for those who feel confident on their bikes. It’s also easy to get on the train back to Ås (or if you want to cycle in the opposite direction, from Ås to Moss after the trip).

For those who think it fits with a little leg stretch and refreshments after 12 km on the bike, many opportunities for a stop already in Drøbak. Håndverksbakeriet has perhaps the best baked goods, while Pavels Bakeri og konditori is many cyclists’ favourite stop, and can offer Børek, delicious Cheesecake and a warm little square for good weather days. For those who have set aside the whole day, there are many opportunities to take in some culture and sights along this trip. Drøbak has several galleries and handicraft shops that are open during the summer season.

From Drøbak, the journey continues on less busy roads to Hvitsten, where Edward Munch’s summer place can be visited and the cultural destination Ramme experienced, if you take a small turn from the route. The next town, Son, is another summer town with a bustling life and many opportunities to re-energise. For example, Hagestua; a popular place located right by the pier with a small garden where food can be enjoyed outside.

From Son to Moss, the road continues along less busy roads (more so in high season), with the exception of about 3 km on the Oslo road and pedestrian/cycle paths for the last few kilometres to Moss station.
