Description.
This short tour gives you an insight into the history of the paper mill along the Skienselva river. It was Scandinavia’s largest paper mill at the end of the 19th century. The tour starts at Løveid locks, which were completed in 1861 and are part of the Telemark Canal, which runs all the way to Dalen in inner Telemark. Along the Skotfoss trail there are a number of boards with information about the industrial history of the area, as well as the remains of Scandinavia’s first electric railway, built in 1892, with a top speed of 7.5 km per hour!
Two-thirds of the cycle route is completely car-free, and there are nice picnic areas with views of the river.
