Askim Station-Vamma - DGL 31

To get an impression of how we utilise the power of a seemingly stagnant Glomma, we recommend a trip to Inner Østfold. Vamma power station is Norway's largest river power station and is one of a total of 112 power stations between Mjøsa and the outlet in Fredrikstad.

Østfold has many power stations and is an important part of the history of hydropower. Vamma Power Station was completed back in 1915. Using Norwegian technology with Francis turbines, the 27 metre drop generated 17 megawatts of electricity. Today, Vamma power station produces 212 megawatts.

It is Norway’s largest river power station and is one of several power stations in Indre Østfold municipality. The power stations here are among Norway’s oldest and are located in the Glomma watercourse. Vamma power station has the status of a cultural monument in Norwegian power generation. Askim Historielag has been working for several years to restore the railway line that ran to the power station and in 2023 opened the Vamma open-air museum at Vammatoppen, which has now become a great hiking destination. Walking on the walls of the dam is quite spectacular, but the area is otherwise poorly organised for visitors. Vamma power station is an attractive outdoor area, accessible both by bike and on foot.
