Start: Kismulvegen at Kalandseidet, Osvegen, E39.
End: Nyhauglia at the northern end of Nordåsvannet.
Challenges: None.
Car traffic: Between Skjold and Lagunen you cycle through residential areas with some crossing car traffic. The road also passes through housing estates between Stend station and Fana church. Otherwise none.
Type of bicycle that can be used: All.
Special considerations: Gamle Osbanetraseen is used by children, walkers, joggers and cyclists. The road passes through residential areas along Stendvannet, along Lagunen shopping centre and by Skjold. Between Stend and Lagunen there is currently (spring 2019) roadworks with heavy traffic, but the cycle path largely bypasses the construction area.
Winter ploughing: Good winter maintenance most of the way. Be aware of surface water that can freeze.
Alternative to
This route is a great alternative to: E39 to Nesttun and Os, Fanaveien at Skjold, Sjøsideveien between Krambua and Lagunen shopping centre.
Description.
You won’t find flatter cycling in Bergen than this! The route follows a disused railway line that makes for very easy cycling. The route is almost completely car-free, and therefore suitable for children and others who are not confident in traffic. The section between Kalandseidet and Fana Church is particularly child-friendly. Here, the cycle path follows its own route and only crosses a modestly busy road twice.
Both between Krambua and Nesttun, and between Stend and Kalandsvannet, it’s almost like cycling on a tarmac forest road. The disused Rådal and Stend railway stations are located along the line. The latter is a railway museum in the summer. There’s a nice picnic area at Klokkarvannet, but don’t forget to enjoy the view of Kalandsvannet.
