Taking your bike on the gondola from Øyer in Gudbrandsdalen up to Mosetertoppen, almost eight hundred metres above sea level, is a great way to start a cycling tour. Augseterrunden is a great way to get to know Øyerfjellet. It’s a little off the beaten track, with some gentle uphill sections, but it’s no longer than most people can manage. Car traffic along the way is minimal or non-existent, such as on the first and last four kilometres between Mosetertoppen and Steinmyrhaugen.
Although you start at Hafjell, one of the country’s largest cabin towns, almost the entire route passes through areas with little development, just a few farms and older individual cabins. There are two stretches of the route that can present challenges; one is the cart track over Bottrudhaugen towards Rognhaugen, which can be muddy after rain. The other is the slopes from the Hynna river up to Knidalen, where you climb two hundred metres in six kilometres. On the other hand, the last mile is dominated by downhill slopes and flats and can be cycled quickly.
Bike hire and several catering options are available at Mosetertoppen.
Suitable for
The tour is suitable for both exercise cyclists and families with children aged 11 – 12 who are used to cycling.
Bike type
Best suited for mountain bikes and hybrid bikes.
Hiking tips
On your way home, you can take a detour to Sjøsætra. It’s open on weekends in the summer and has simple catering and various animals on the farm. It’s only a few hundred metres to walk from the farm up to Sjøsæterfjellet itself (1049 metres above sea level), which has great views.
