- Trip from Øyvind Wold Steigen: Engeløya round
Engeløya, in the north of Steigen municipality, is just the right size for a nice day trip by bike. Starting from the express boat stop at Bogen on the mainland, you cycle three kilometres over bridges and embankments before reaching Engeløya. The trip around the island is just over three miles, and the only noticeable uphill section is at Mjeldskardet, where you climb around fifty metres.
Most of the route is almost flat and runs close to the sea and the cultural landscape of the island. Engeløya has a war museum with Batterie Dietl, one of the largest cannons made during the Second World War. There’s a cosy village centre at Laskestad, and finds from the Viking Age at Vollmoen. From the west and north sides of the island, you can see the midnight sun and parts of the Lofoten Wall on the other side of the Vestfjord. But probably the biggest attraction is Bøsanden, a kilometre-long sandy beach in an exceptionally beautiful location with steep mountains in the background.
There are no cycle lanes along the road, but traffic is fairly modest, especially on the northern part of the island.

Hiking tips
