A round trip that is popular by bike both from the cottage village of Nordseter and from the larger cottage village of Sjusjøen. It has two noticeable climbs, but is otherwise short enough for most people to manage. Using an electric bike will of course lower the threshold for taking the trip. From the junction with Sjusjøen, there’s a two-kilometre uphill stretch before it becomes easy cycling and a lot of trilling back down towards Sjusjøen. It’s seven kilometres to Sjusjøen. Expect some traffic here on fine summer days.

Sjusjøen has a grocery store, several restaurants, a large sports shop, a barbecue/playground at Sjusjølunga, and more.

Although Sjusjøen is perhaps the place in the world with the greatest interest in cross-country skiing, many people cycle here in the summer, and there are signposted routes in several directions. We’ll be following the Birkebeinerritt trail northwards over Storåsen (920 metres above sea level) and down to Kroksjøen, where there are both picnic and fishing opportunities. Gently undulating on a wide gravel road to Elgåsen. From here, the hike continues westwards along the south side of Mellsjøen and past Nysetra to Reinsvatn.

The return to Nordseter passes Nevelvatn, a signposted detour to a fishing and swimming area. Steep descent over the last kilometre to Nordseter.

Suitable for

The tour is suitable for both exercise cyclists and families with children aged 12 – 13 who are used to cycling.

Bike type

Suitable for all types of bikes except road bikes.

Hiking tips

At Kuåsen, just north of Kroksjøen, there is a signposted detour eastwards of around half a kilometre to Ludden-hytta. This is where local original Ludvik Olestadengen lived in a very simple cabin for many years. The cabin and some of his belongings have been preserved and are worth a visit.
