  • Terrain Flat

By bike: 27 km

The second stage of NRK Sykkelsommer i Helgeland travelled from Tjøtta to Sør-Herøy. We continue on national road 17 northwards on outer Tjøtta, passing bridges with fantastic views on all sides. Close to the sea with a rich island farm to the left and with Kvasstinden (1010 metres above sea level) and Skjæringen (1037 metres above sea level) right in front of us. If the weather is good and you’re in good shape, you can park your bike and head for the heights. The bonus is a fantastic view of Øygården. The route is otherwise flat and easy to cycle.
After 20 kilometres, Alstahaug is a recommended stop. This is considered to be the oldest farm settlement in Nord-Trøndelag. We’ll also have time to take a closer look at Alstadhaug Church, a Gothic-style stone church.
It’s 6 kilometres from Alstahaug to Søvik ferry quay. On the one-mile ferry journey, there’s time for coffee and a snack and to enjoy the scenery from a 360-degree perspective. The tour ends at the Herøy Prestegård cultural centre, where you can see how priests lived in the 1800s.

Herøy offers some accommodation if you want to stay under cover. None of them are certified by the Cyclists’ Association as Bicycle Friendly Hosts, but you should have no problem parking your bike and equipment safely at any of them:
