Utsira has a lot to offer and is really worth a visit by bike. You can easily get round to all the places worth visiting in the course of a day. First and foremost, a visit to the island gives you a sense of getting out into the sea and away from the hustle and bustle of all the infrastructure. The island is well exposed to the elements, and we recommend a cycling visit on a day with calm wind conditions.

From Haugesund, the Utsira ferry takes you out in about 70 minutes. The island has little traffic, and by bike you can get around to the vantage point, the two windmills and, oddly enough, the street art. The latter is something Irving himself often seeks out on his cycling trips, and is a favourite subject for his photos.

Utsira has a rich bird life, with over 300 species visiting during the migratory season and is a favourite place for birdwatchers. With its 200 permanent residents, Utsira is Norway’s least populous municipality, and also the second smallest in area. Few inhabitants mean little car traffic, making the island perfect for an active day out for the whole family.

With this route, Irving has covered virtually all small roads and takes you to great viewpoints and most of the other things you can experience. Some of the outcrops on the route are quite rough and with steep climbs, requiring good cycling skills or that you put your bike down or roll it up the worst slopes.
Dalanaustet, located on the north side of the island, is a good place to have a meal or other refreshment.
