Øymarksjøen south of Ørje is one of Østfold’s many large lakes. The trip around the lake is on roads with little traffic, but some of the traffic is heavy traffic and timber transport.

The trip only varies between 110 and 180 metres above sea level. The sum of many small uphill stretches and a few half-length ones means that you still climb more than five hundred metres in total. The surroundings are a fine mix of cultural landscapes, forests and small hamlets, with many views of the sea along the way.

Halfway, at Strømfoss in the south, there are several reasons to stop; a rebuilt old country store/café, the Møllerens hus café, as well as the fact that vintage boats can often be seen at the jetty. Strømfoss also has a large, organised picnic area by the river, including a shelter if it rains.

In the Lock Museum at Ørje, there are also vintage boats to see, as well as an exhibition on the history of the Halden Canal. In Ørje there is also a sports shop and several eateries.

The eastern side of Øymarksjøen is also part of National Cycle Route 9, Villmarksruta, which runs from Halden via Finnskogen to Trysil. If you try the stage along Øymarksjøen, you may well be curious to see more of Villmarksruta.
